Question of the month

Senior Day Care / in-home care. Why are they just short-term remedies and not Long Term Care (LTC) options?

Senior Day Care as well as at home care are typically a first choice when a loved one begins to require even small amounts of help with care but as people’s care demands progress these choices become much less functional. There are 2 primary factors that make both short term solutions: rising cost as well as rising care needs that the family is no longer able to supply.

Personal Care Agency (PCA)

care averages $25/hr. with a 2-4 hr min. If you need 8 hours of care a day or more the cost becomes too large. Daycare may be a little more reasonable at $ 60-70/ day however it is usually for a minimal hrs. Moreover, the household still must provide transport to and also from the facility and provide all the custodial treatment and organization of care themselves before and after the 6-8 hours of adult daycare. Many correctly uncover that the opportunity cost of driving there two ways is too great for the short break from care they get. If the Adult Day Care is in close proximity to your house that would be a big plus and make this a more usable option for that family.

One more reason

One more reason they are short term alternatives is because of the limited consistency in team members, lack of coordination of other medical services, and insufficient back up offered by most PCA companies. It is common to have frequent adjustments in caregivers. Many of these caretakers have minimal training with little oversight. There is little professional guidance and the medical professionals typically have no interaction with the caregivers. Since the caretakers change most PCA companies typically invest much less in caregiver training than they might if they expected to keep that caretaker for a longer time. Home care firms provide a staffing service and also depend on the household to organize treatment & oversee the agencies worker.

Residential Care Homes

Many Assisted Living facilities provide both housing and also assistance and are a great option compared to in-home care and senior day care when long term care is needed. While many really hope, in-home care will be the option they commonly fail to remember that custodial and medical care needs will likely grow and both PCA and Adult Day Care just avoided the challenging decision of relocating to a much more complete, budget-friendly, care option.
